Estate1896 is located in the Village of Pyrgos, very centrally.

Pyrgos village was built by the Venetians in the 14th century, on top of a hill in the center of Santorini. This traditional village is located 6 kilometers south-east of Fira, the capital, and still retains the characteristics of its Venetian fortress. It offers, especially from hill top, a unique panoramic view all around the island and the caldera, all the way up to the village of Oia to the North.

Pyrgos was one of the five fortified villages built overall by the Venetians; the Venetian castle has survived and can be visited and admired by Pyrgos’ guests.

A labyrinth of winding paths, which follow the shape of the hill, little traditional whitewashed houses built around the castle and fascinating art galleries located in hidden corners, make Pyrgos an ideal distinctive place for your holidays!

There are 48 Byzantine churches in Pyrgos, the most remarkable being the frescoed Theotoaki (meaning little Virgin Mary), standing in the entrance of the Venetian Castle which is called “Kastelli”. There is also monastery of the Prophet Elijah, which stands on the top of the homonymous mountain at 2 kilometers from Pyrgos centre to the South.

Developed in a more traditional way and with full respect to the old architecture style, Pyrgos offers a good selection of hotels and apartments for vacation, all enriched by the beautiful view of the isle and of the Aegean Sea.

The sunset from the hill top, the “Kastelli”, the Venetian Castle are breathtaking and preferred by many more than Oia’s sunset, as setting sun colors can be seen covering the whole island volcanic land.

The beaches of Kamari and Perissa are just a few kilometers from the village and easily accessible by public transportation.

The Easter holidays are amazing in Pyrgos: on the Holy Friday, the entire village is lighted up with torches which give life to a very suggestive scenery.

The Easter Sunday, “Kyriaki tou Pascha”, is celebrated in the main square of the village, where first an effigy is burnt, and then beautiful fireworks are launched, while people can eat a banquet with baked lamb and drink good wine.

At the entrance of the village of Pyrgos, is VinSanto (the wine of God or the wine of Santorini), the largest wine cooperative of the island, where you can enjoy wine tasting sessions on the beautiful terrace with a stunning view.
