Pyrgos : the old Capital, the contemporary Gem

Built on top of a hill in the center of Santorini, Pyrgos village offers unique panoramic view all around the island up to the caldera to the village of Oia. This traditional village is located 8 kilometers south-east of Fira, and still retains the characteristics of the Venetian fortress.

Pyrgos was one of the five fortified villages built in 1400 in Santorini by the Venetians and still today the castle above the village can be admired.

A labyrinth of winding paths, which follow the shape of the hill, little traditional whitewashed houses built around the castle and fascinating art galleries located in hidden corners, make Pyrgos an ideal place for your holidays! There are also many Byzantine churches in Pyrgos, the most remarkable is the frescoed Theotoaki and the monastery of the Prophet Elijah, which stands on the top of the homonymous mountain at 4 kilometers from the town. Relatively developed, Pyrgos still offers a good selection of hotels and apartments for rent all enriched by the beautiful view of the isle and of the Aegean Sea. The sunsets are breathtaking and the beaches of Kamari and Perissa are just a few kilometers from the village.

The Easter holidays are amazing: on the Holy Friday, Megali Paraskevi, the entire village is lighted up with torches which give life to a very suggestive scenery.

On the Easter Sunday, Kyriaki tou Pascha, is celebrated in the main square of the village, where first is burned an effigy, and then beautiful fireworks are launched and eventually people can eat a banquet with baked lamb and drink good wine.

At the entrance of the village of Pyrgos, there is VinSanto (the wine of God), the largest wine company of the island, where you can enjoy wine tasting sessions on the beautiful terrace with a stunning view.
