Santorini is one of the most unique places in the world. In fact, it is the only volcanic caldera in the world that is inhabited. The volcanic scenery gives Santorini a splendid, eerie character.
Here are five reasons to visit the beautiful Greek island
The volcano
Nowhere in the planet is there human activity, not to mention city development, around a volcanic caldera. Santorini is the only volcano area in the world that is fully active, full of human activity and, on top, has turned the catastrophic event of volcanic eruptions to an advantage.
You will probable have no other opportunity to visit a caldera and, furthermore, to make a walking tour on the volcanic craters. And, in total safety!!
History
Santorini is a living historic place. Its formation is so recent, only in 1500BC was it that Santorini (Thera) was formed by the massive volcanic explosion that is blamed for the obliteration of the Minoan Civilization in Crete.
The wine
The only vineyard in the world that has not changed for hundreds of years. The vineyard dates back to 1500BC, at the time of the huge volcanic explosion. The vineyard is “aftofyes” (self developed) and is probably the scarcest in the whole planet.
Do not forget to do wine tasting while in Santorini. Do not miss “Assyrtiko” and “Mavrotragano” wine varieties.
Sunset
Thousand visitors each day gather in Oia and other places to watch the sun setting into the sea, a phenomenon that is extremely rare in the Mediterranean.
