Santorini is not just made up of beaches and sea but it has a not indifferent culinary history. Trust me you’ll eat very well there. The Greek cuisine, based on the Mediterranean diet, is certainly closer to the Italian one (with some differences). Even in Greece we find dishes with olive oil and the use of spices like mint, rosemary, oregano and thyme, that season vegetables and fish of all kind. It’s a centuries-old kitchen and excels with its 25 centuries in the traditions and quality. The Greek Souvlaki is certainly the most famous food, eaten as “pita” together with the various sauces is so delicious. Its also so good the “gyros pita”, pork meat accompanied optionally with tomatoes, fried potatoes, onions, tzatziki (is a cucumber sauce with garlic and yogurt) and flatbread called “pita”. Between the many Greek dishes which is worth to taste I mention: moussaka, pastiso, souvlaki (skewers of meat or fish), kokoretsi, ghiouvetsi, keftedes, dolmades (rolls in vine leaves), kalamarakia, octopus and shrimps, swordfish, etc. Among the famous Greek sauces we have: tzatziki, skordalia, taramosalata, melitzanosalata, etc. In this regard I recommend to taste them as an appetizer served with black olives, pickles, anchovies, salami, rice rolls or ground meat entrees, the famous “mezedes”.
The Greek cheeses also offer the following varieties: Feta, Kasseri, Manouri, Ladotiri, Chloro, Metsovone, Yaourti (better know as the Greek Yogurt).
The opportunity to eat well in Santorini is not uncommon. Equally to spend little remaining satisfied with the environment and the food. Of course, being Santorini an island, the fish is in abundance on all restaurant menus and it’s therefore possible to eat excellent, grilled or fried fresh fish and pasta dishes.
